Internal Medicine
Internal medicine is a big part of what we do at AACC. It involves working to prevent and diagnose diseases inside the body including heart, liver, kidney, urinary, endocrine (hormonal) diseases, cancer, neurology, and behavior.
We use specific tests (like blood and urine tests) and imaging (x-rays and ultrasound) to help find abnormalities so we can discuss treatment options. We encourage preventive medicine by doing tests before a pet is sick so we can potentially diagnose diseases before they are severe. If your pet is already showing symptoms that concern you, we recommend specific tests to help us determine the cause of the symptoms so we can advise how best to treat your pet.
We have a full in-house laboratory to run most tests the same day, right in our hospital. Some specialized tests, however, are sent out to our partner laboratories and we will call you when the results are in and discuss the findings and our recommendations.
As our pets age, they commonly develop multiple diseases at the same time. Other pets may have particularly challenging or unusual presentations of a certain disease. In these cases, we have an internal medicine specialist that can come to our hospital to conveniently treat your pet without you having to go elsewhere. Internal medicine specialists have completed an additional 4 years of post-doctoral training, and have passed national board specialty tests in canine and feline medicine. They are uniquely qualified to perform abdominal ultrasound, endoscopy (to view and biopsy the stomach and intestines or pulmonary systems), and advise directly on complicated cases. We are very excited to be able to work directly with these talented veterinarians and to offer their services to you when the need arises.
